Causes of Eating Disorders

The causes of eating disorders are not just about the amount of food people stop taking to lose weight, the deeper meaning includes “behavioral, emotional, psychological, interpersonal, and social factors…” (NEDA)

Eating disorders also includes problems with personality & genetic/environmental factors.

Psychological factors include low self-esteem, mood swings, depression, and nervousness.  Interpersonal factors include family problems, being unemotional, not expressing any feelings, and family history of eating disorders.

Social factors can be cultural pressures/norms, and the image and standards that creates a specific body weight that females and males should be at.

Personality factors consist of possessiveness and the need for approval.

Susan Blumenthal, M.D. states that the environment that the person is living can also add to the cause of eating disorder as people around the person can be negative and critical (Self Help).

Scientists and researchers are still trying to find out “about the underlying causes of these emotionally and physically damaging conditions” (NEDA).
